Star Wars: Everything We Know About George Lucas' Sequel Trilogy
7. A Love Interest
While some of Lucas' plans have been used by Disney in some way, such as the old heroes returning, Han dying, and a passing of the torch taking place, one that has been (almost) completely discarded is the notion of a love interest for Luke Skywalker.
This is something Lucas first revealed as a sequel plot point way back in 1988, which has been touched upon since, including in the novelisation of The Last Jedi. While that doesn't have Luke in a proper love interest, it does include a sequence where he imagines life had he never left Tatooine, instead having a quiet existence and getting married.
In the EU, Luke did go on to have a wife - only a few years after Lucas himself mentioned the idea - with Mara Jade being introduced and becoming not only his partner, but being trained by him as a Jedi and becoming a hugely popular figure. There's a good chance, then, that she might've been the person to appear in the sequel trilogy, especially as Lucas was more closely married to the EU than Disney have been.
