Part of the reason Lucas was working on a new trilogy was to make Lucasfilm a more lucrative property to sell, but at the same time he did still have eyes on making at least one movie himself.

While it was unlikely he'd direct the whole sequel trilogy as he did with the prequels, it instead would've been something more like the originals, with Lucas initially planning on directing Episode VII himself and then moving on.

He even had a release date in mind, according to USA Today, with the movie being eyed for a May 2015 release. That fits with what Disney wanted as well, before the movie - now under J.J. Abrams' direction - was moved back to December of the same year.
