Star Wars Needs To Get Over The Original Trilogy

If Star Wars is too keep on running for years/decades/aeons, as the Mouse House certainly hope it will, then it can't simply focus on the one family, something they've recognised by making these anthology movies. But so far they've played it rather safe by sticking so close to the Original Trilogy and focusing on either a recognisable character or a previously mentioned story.

Looking at the more immediate future, it promises much of the same. Solo definitely sets up a sequel, although its box-office might prevent such a film from happening, and there's been a lot of talk about a Lando spin-off.

Aside from those two, a Boba Fett movie is in the works, with James Mangold writing and directing, and an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie reportedly has Stephen Daldry set to helm, with rumours that it'll shoot as early as next year. The other Star Wars Stories repeatedly mentioned are Jabba the Hutt and Yoda.

These all have two things in common: 1) they're very well-known characters, and 2) they all tie into the Original Trilogy.

Even the planned adventures that deviate from this open do so slightly: the next animated TV show, Star Wars Resistance, will be a prequel to The Force Awakens and show the rise of the new rebellion, while Jon Favreau's live-action TV series will take place just a few years after the Battle of Endor, with both exploring the same sort of territory as Battlefront II's story campaign. It's within all of this OT+ timeline, too, that the comics and novels are set, meaning that, while there are worthwhile stories, the universe doesn't feel so expanded anymore.
