The film will be focusing on a band of rebel spies, but they've got to come from somewhere, and have people helping to plan their assault in order to ensure its success. So it would make sense if we were to see some of the Rebel leaders from the original films Bail Organa is a possibility in this regard, as is someone like Mon Mothma - admittedly we don't meet her until Return Of The Jedi, but that doesn't mean she wasn't around before the first film, and she's the sort of recognisable figure who would help give this some grounding in the saga's continuity without too much trouble (though they would probably need a recast). The same could be said for someone like Admiral Ackbar: he's an easily recognisable figure, it'd make sense, and you don't need an awful lot of him. The spies themselves are probably all going to be new characters, but again we could see some familiar pilots among the ranks, even if they aren't part of this particular mission. Porkins, Wedge Antilles, and Biggs Darklighter are all characters who would've been around at this time, and while it may require different actors playing them, just a mention of these cult heroes' names would elicit excitement.
