Star Wars: Rogue One - 10 Simple Blunders That Would Ruin It

1. Jyn Is Rey's Mother

I'd call this the granddaddy of allusions if that wasn't somehow a joke about Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. A popular theory that took hold from the moment Felicity Jones was cast and has exploded since the trailer premiered is that Jyn Erso is Rey's mother. Now the motivations are easy to see - they aren't lacking in physical similarities and if you squint you can make the timeline's add up (if not totally seamless when you consider Jones is in her thirties) - but doesn't this go against the whole purpose of the film?

It would personify all the other potentially ruinous issues we've discussed so far - tying Rogue One far too explicitly into the Sequel Trilogy and reducing its strength as a standalone film - but on a more character-based level it makes both Rey and Jyn lesser. Star Wars has had a female problem for decades and having the two strong-willed heroines be related doesn't really show strides are being made.

Daisy Ridley's even come out and rebuffed the theory (not that that's stopped people saying it), so, even if Darth Vader does unmask and Yen uses the Force and Han Solo cameos, we can at least rest easy thh this won't happen.
