Even though they were turned into space monks, there's something unavoidably cool about the Jedi. So cool that any Star Wars story without a Force wielder feels a little less Star Wars-y. Little wonder then that so many regular characters in the Expanded Universe eventually develop Jedi powers out of nowhere - Kyle Katarn (the EU stealer of the Death Star plans), Corran Horn (a New Republic X-Wing pilot) and, if we're being rational about it, even Leia.

Heck, even when the presence of Jedi explicitly goes against the internal logic of a story writers still can't resist; Rebels take place at the tail-end of the Jedi Purge, yet a high proportion of the characters (three of the leads and most of the villains) are using lightsabers and flinging Force attacks like it's the height of the Republic.

That's not to say these stories are fun, just that there's a point where cool is overriden by desperation. And Rogue One may be that point - set just before the first film, it takes a lot out of Obi-Wan and Luke being special and would only be played to get some sweet, sweet saber merchandising money. Although Jedi are really only part of the problem...
