Star Wars: Rogue One - 10 Ways It Changes A New Hope
1. The Title
When the original Star Wars film was re-branded as "A New Hope" four years after its initial release, everyone assumed this was referring to Luke Skywalker. And how could they not given the content of the film? However, after Rogue One, this title takes on a whole new meaning.
Throughout Rogue One, we are constantly reminded that rebellions are built on hope, and that everything the characters are doing are anything but a surefire success plans. They do what they do in the name of hope. This culminates in Leia's line that closes the film, in which she receives the stolen Death Star plans. When the rebel who gave her the transmission asked what had been delivered, she replied with simply "hope." The hope that one day the sacrifices made to steal those plans would be worth it.
Well, that day would come sooner than they may have thought, as the assault on the Death Star would come shortly after the events of Rogue One concluded.
This begs the question: Was this new hope really Luke, or was it what came of Rogue One's first and last stand? Sure, the obvious answer is that the content of this new film simply and deliberately played on the title of the old one, however this creates a brand new perspective and meaning to said title.
Rogue One is a film that feels so much bigger than itself. And the fact that this story was right under our noses this entire time, and that it creates an entire new point of view to look at the original Star Wars from, including its very title, makes it truly feel like a perfect story that was more than worth telling.
