The flashback scenes were being seen through Jyn's memories, as she jolts awake and we find her inside a prison cell, being guarded from the outside by a Stormtrooper.

This is on Jedha, as we get a very impressive shot of a Star Destroyer overhead, before some Rebels come and break Jyn out of prison so that they can use her in the fight against the Empire, on account of who her father is (and the fact she's clearly damn good at what she does).
