Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Reasons The Haters Are Dead Wrong
6. The Villains Suck
Darth Vader is a hard act to follow. One of cinemas all-time great villains, Vaders dark helmet and respirator-aided breath left an indelible mark in the pop culture zeitgeist. Before The Force Awakens release, fans wondered if J.J. Abrams could craft a villain worthy enough to stand alongside Vader in the annals of great cinematic bad guys. The answer from the haters: he didnt. Not even close. A lot of unforgiving fans have called The Force Awakens villain, Kylo Ren, nothing more than an emo Darth Vader. A parody twitter account called Emo Kylo Ren mocking the character even sprang up online. Really? Calling Kylo an emo Vader misses the point of what Abrams tried to bring to the table with his new villain. Abrams has explained that he wanted The Force Awakens to focus on the evolution of a villain as well as a hero. He didn't want a 'ready-made villain, but someone who was in the process'. Abrams gambit worked. Kylo proved to be a complicated character whose emotional outbursts gave him an unpredictable, dangerous edge. It's a different kind of bad guy than the single-mindedly ruthless Vader, one that stands on his own.
