Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Simple Explanations That Would Have Improved The Film
10. How Does Lor San Tekka Know Luke Skywalker?
Lor San Tekka, the character played by veteran actor Max Von Sydow, is one of the first proper characters we get to see in the movie. Until he's not: he's killed off after less than five minutes of screen time, having bestowed a map upon Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. He's established as a character who "knows a lot," and The Force Awakens actually tells us that he is a friend of Princess Leia - or, at least, she trusts the man - and that he is well aware of what happened with Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren. The movie decides to hold back any further information about this guy, however, which leaves him feeling a lot like a two-dimensional "Wise Old Man" character. Would it have hurt to throw in some more information? Or, you know, an explanation as to how he knew Luke, attained the map, or came to live on Jakku? These things will likely be explained in Episode VIII, but two years is a long time to wait for something that could have been laid out a bit clearer in this film (and with a just few lines of dialogue).
