Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Simple Explanations That Would Have Improved The Film
7. What Made Finn So Willing To Defect?
One of the more interesting ideas inherent to Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the story of Stormtrooper Finn, who - all of a sudden - decides that he doesn't want to be a Stormtrooper anymore. He defects from The First Order, and teams up with Resistance fighter Poe Dameron to escape from Kylo Ren and a life of servitude. Thing is, the movie goes into very little detail about what, exactly, makes Finn different from all the other Stormtroopers. If he was brainwashed as a child and forced into the First Order, what allows Finn to feel empathy when his comrades cannot? And if the theories surrounding his supposed "sensitivity to the Force" are true, couldn't we have more of a hint towards that being the case at some point in the film? As it stands, Finn's decision to defect feels wholly undeveloped and underwritten. There needed to be a more detailed explanation surrounding his reasons for running away.
