Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Ways It's A Remake Of A New Hope
6. The Grand Moff Tarkin/General Hux Parallel
Essentially, Domhnall Gleeson's slimy General Hux is a rebooted version of Peter Cushing's infamous Grand Moff Tarkin from A New Hope. It's one of the more obvious parallels shared between A Force Awakens and the first Star Wars movie - another element that seems to exist as a means of cementing the film as a bonafide Episode IV copycat. Even the relationship between Hux and Kylo Ren mirrors the one shared between Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader; they clearly don't like one another, but have been brought together to work side by side under a more powerful villain - in this case, Snoke. Hux also serves exactly the same narrative purpose as Tarkin did in A New Hope, in as much as he's in charge of the Starkiller Base - and firing its immense canon upon unsuspecting planets in the galaxy. Abrams obviously had no qualms including this character as a modernised Tarkin, but he sure does serve to enforce it as a "remake."
