Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 12 Reasons It Lives Up To The Hype
3. BB-8
BB-8 was the instant scene-stealer of the first trailer, rolling and beeping his way along the Jakku desert and straight into our hearts. Every glimpse suggested that this was the droid we're looking for, the R2-D2 of a new generation, but could it really live up to that expectation? What if, over the course of the movie, it didn't actually do all that much, or turned out to be kinda annoying? Well, those fears and doubts were ridiculous. BB-8 absolutely owns this movie. He sounds wonderful, watching him move is incredible (and you have to remember it's an actual working, practical droid), and he has so much personality it's unbelievable. Whether it's with Poe Dameron or Rey, BeeBee is able to really convey a sense of emotion and humour that some actors would struggle with. He can say more with a beep and a tilt than some can with an entire monologue. Not only does the droid look great and have a unique personality (that scene where he's zapping Finn!), but he's also incredibly useful and resourceful, and very key to the plot. That moment when he works in tandem with an awakened R2 is just an utter joy to behold; it's like Rey getting to fly the Falcon with Han, only with an even greater sense of emotion behind it.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
