Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 8 Major Revelations From The Filmmakers

8. A Very Different Role For Luke Skywalker

After spending the past two years or so speculating and reading rumours about Luke Skywalker, it's kind of ironic that we all know as little about him now we've seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens as we did back then. However, original screenwriter Michael Arndt confirmed during a Q&A that there was a time when the Jedi did more than appear in the closing moments of the movie. In fact, Mark Hamill was set to have a leading role which would have seen him take the place of Han Solo and serve as a co-star of sorts to Daisy Ridley's Rey following the destruction of her home and her setting out on a quest for justice, meeting Luke along the way. Arndt admitted to struggling with incorporating the fan-favourite character in such a huge way though, revealing: "It just felt like every time Luke came in and entered the movie, he just took it over. Suddenly you didn€™t care about your main character anymore because, €˜Oh f**k, Luke Skywalker€™s here. I want to see what he€™s going to do.€™€ As great as it would have been to see Luke receive a larger role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (especially as we never got to see him reunited with Han), this is totally understandable, and now Rey has been introduced, nothing should stop him from having a more significant presence in Episode VIII!
