Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 11 Major Details Revealed By Vanity Fair
1. Episode IX Was "Carrie's Film"
A lot of the Vanity Fair cover story revolved around the dearly departed Carrie Fisher, whose sudden passing occurred only a couple of months before many of the interviews took place.
There are some great anecdotes in the piece - such as the fact she has a scene in TLJ where she slaps Oscar Isaac's Poe, and did so about 27 times - but there's also some key information about Leia's role, and how that's had to change in the aftermath of Fisher's death. While her role in The Last Jedi remains unchanged in any way, Episode IX was - Kathleen Kennedy explains - going to be "Carrie's film":
"The minute she finished [Episode VIII], she grabbed me and said, āIād better be at the forefront of IX!ā Because Harrison was front and centre on VII, and Mark is front and centre on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.ā
Lucasfilm have been pretty clear that the story will be reworked, and that Fisher will not appear at all, with Kamp saying it's his belief Leia's "her absence/death will be alluded to in some elegant way."
