Johnson says that this "coda" always meant a lot to him. He admits that he could've lopped it off and just ended with the Falcon shooting off, but felt this was important because it confirms that Luke hasn't just saved the Resistance, but he's reignited hope in the galaxy.

That's what's expressed by these kids playing with a Luke Skywalker action figure, and then Temiri Blagg (aka Broom Boy))looking up at the stars: "That’s what these movies are hopefully all about."
