Star Wars The Last Jedi: 8 Plot Theories From The Expanded Universe

While many people have been focusing on the title and its ominous colouring in a completely negative context, there’s hope that all is not lost just yet.

In the novel ‘Heir to the Empire’, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s spirit encourages Luke in a dream with some familiar words making an appearance:

The vision seemed to waver and become fainter. "And now, farewell," Ben said as if he hadn't heard the question. "I loved you as a son, and as a student, and as a friend. Until we meet again, may the Force be with you.""Ben—!"But Ben turned, and the image faded... and in the dream, Luke knew he was gone. Then I am alone, he told himself. I am the last of the Jedi.He seemed to hear Ben's voice, faint and indistinct, as if from a great distance. "Not the last of the old Jedi, Luke. The first of the new."

Assuming that this is where the title has been drawn from, this definition fits squarely with Star Wars’ throughline of good triumphing over evil. The Last Jedi referring not to the actual last living member of the order, but to the beginning of a new generation, possibly beginning with Rey would be a satisfying explanation.

Of course, there’s always the chance that the fan theories circulating about Snoke being the last ‘true Jedi’ could be on the money, but this optimistic angle would make for a much more intriguing development.
