Star Wars: The Force Awakens was - for better or worse - a retread of sorts of A New Hope. It introduced great new characters and ideas, but on a structural level it largely covered the same beats.

However, The Last Jedi isn't shaping up to 'rhyme' with The Empire Strikes Back, and instead is gonna do things differently. That's partly evidenced by the talk of a different tone, but Oscar Isaac - aka Poe Dameron - has said that it felt more like "making an independent movie," adding:

"Rian is definitely going to places and investigating things that haven’t really been done in the Star Wars universe. For me, it’s so fun getting to explore different things that I wouldn’t have expected in this universe... Certain things we get to play with – this kind of intimacy that we get to find – it’s special. It’s been really fun.”

To make a Star Wars film that's different and weirder to anything that's come before is why you hire someone like Rian Johnson in the first place, and it really does sound like that's what he's delivering here.
