Star Wars: The Last Jedi Official Trailer - 8 Things You Might've Missed
1. The Empire Strikes Back Parallels
Being the middle entry of a Star Wars trilogy, there are of course going to be shades of The Empire Strikes Back here ("it rhymes" etc etc). But aside from the increased stakes and darkness, there are some more overt parallels in terms of both plot points and also the imagery conjured up.
The Battle of Crait echoing the Battle of Hoth and Luke training Rey are the two most obvious examples, but there are some others. The shot of Leia on Crait at the Resistance base conjures up a reminder of her waiting for Han and Luke to return on Hoth, and those crystal foxes hark back to the tauntauns of that planet. The shots of Leia and Kylo, where it's suggested they can sense each other's presence, invokes memories of Luke and Leia's Force connection as well.
Then there's Ahch-To, which is giving off some serious Dagobah vibes, as we can see below (ok, a couple of those might be stretching slightly, but there is definitely a similar mood and aesthetic to the two locations).
Snoke trying to turn Rey (if that is what's happening there) is more in-line with Return of the Jedi, but Vader did try and tempt Luke to his side in Empire as well.
