Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Rian Johnson Interview

What's Next?

Star Wars Episode IX
Lucasfilm

You're not returning for Episode IX, that's gone off to J.J. Abrams now, but do you have any idea where it's going, have you spoken with J.J. at all?

We've spoken, but I'm totally enjoying being an audience member and a fan, and I'm so excited to see where he takes it next because I have no idea. It could go so many different ways, I want to be surprised, I want to be thrilled, I want it to go places that I don't expect. And I have a feeling it'll do that.

And your movie definitely leaves it open to go anywhere.

Yeah. That was part of my goal, y'know, let's set the table for the next one so that the easy answers are taken away. How much fun will that be?

Meanwhile, you're making a new trilogy. Is that what you're doing next, or will there be something non-Star Wars first?

Well, we're still figuring out the timeline for the trilogy. If I can squeeze in a small non-Star Wars movie before I definitely will. I've got a couple that I want to do, so yeah.

And just to wrap-up, in terms of the new trilogy, do you have an idea already? Can you give us any clues yet?

No, I can't give you any clues. [Laughs] But I do have ideas kicking around, I'm starting to figure it out, but it's down the line. It's exciting though, the potential.

Great, thank you very much.

Thanks, it was a pleasure talking to you.
