Star Wars: What Is Luke Skywalker's Role In Episode 9?

4. Rey's Third Lesson

Rey's relationship with Luke came to an end with his new pupil leaving him on Ahch-To to find Kylo Ren, with the Jedi Master telling her that things weren't going to go the way she thought. And, well, he was right, but what about the future for the pair?

Rey left before completing her training under Skywalker, having only two of the planned three lessons - and the deleted scene of Rey thinking she was saving the Caretakers wasn't the final one. Instead, as director Rian Johnson said earlier this year: "I like the notion of the third lesson still floating out there."

So although Rey has the power and the ancient Jedi texts (for whatever they're worth), there's a good chance Luke will return to impart some final wisdom upon Rey. This is what Force Ghosts are for, after all: Qui-Gon Jinn returned to guide Obi-Wan (and Yoda); Obi-Wan and later Yoda both returned to help Luke when he needed it most. So it'd fit with that pattern for Luke to appear to Rey, helping her become a leader and a true Jedi.
