Taking over the role of Jack O'Neill from Kurt Russell from the original Stargate movie, Richard Dean Anderson won over the fans almost immediately with his lighter and more comedic take on the character. He remained in the starring role for the first eight seasons of SG-1, before coming down to a recurring status for the final two seasons.

Already a veteran of the small screen, once he finished his tenure on Stargate, Anderson largely retired from acting so that he could spend more time with his daughter. He was made an honorary Brigadier General in 2004, thanks to his role on Stargate. The show had, from its inception, portrayed the USAF in a positive light.

In recent years, Anderson has helped several charity organizations aimed at cleaning up the world. He is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Sea Shepard Conservation Society and has worked with the members of the Earth Rivers Expeditions to Produce River Project.
