Stephen King: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best

22. Creepshow 2

The law of diminishing returns was very much in effect when it came to this sequel. Creepshow 2 was directed by the original film's cinematographer, with George Romero moving to screenplay duties, and Stephen King nowhere to be seen. Well, not on board the actual film, at least: this time it was Romero who adapted a handful of King's short stories. Which meant that there were no original stories in Creepshow 2, and it probably could have used them. The plots Romero cribs from King's back catalogue are on the lower end of the spectrum, quality-wise, with more in common with the worst of the EC comics the films are paying faithful homage to. There's a noticeable drop in budget, too. Despite Romero's long-time collaborator and SFX genius Tom Savini on board a lot of the big scenes don't quite pay off, and it doesn't have the first film's stellar cast to help paper over some of the cracks. Whilst the original was a perfect B-movie, Creepshow 2 is more Z-list.
