Stephen King: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best
20. Riding The Bullet
Another of the more obscure but impressive lower-budget Stephen King adaptations, Riding The Bullet takes its story from another short story where the supernatural is more metaphorical and open for interpretation, as a death-obsessed hippie tries to kill himself after breaking up with his girlfriend and then goes on a cross-country journey to visit his dying mother. It's a trippy story made into a trippy movie, with Nashville actor Jonathan Jackson doing a credible job of never quite indulging in a total stereotype as the lead character, and a host of stars appearing as the weird and wonderful bunch of people who pick up the hitch-hiker, giving him different perspectives on life and death. The message is heavy-handed and ultimately any room for interpretation is nixed by the ending, but the journey is pretty fun. Plus it involves Cliff Robertson, the guy who played Uncle Ben in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, as a creepy old man who keeps itching his crotch, which is hilarious.
