Stephen Sommers is directing G.I. Joe
Stephen Sommers, at least to a certain degree. I always tend to think we kinda like the same things and he takes on the kind of projects that I would love to work on. I love the look of his movies at times but for whatever reason, they always end up feeling like a big kid's film and that he's simply playing with his toys in his bedroom. There's never any depth. I mean they are entertaining and everything but the secondary characters especially aren't treated with much respect. The word coming out of IESB is that Sommers has been hired to direct the live-action G.I. Joe movie for Paramount Pictures. The script will be the blending of an origin story written by Skip Woods (Swordfish, Hitman) and a more straight forward adaptation by Paul Lovett/David Elliott (Four Brothers) with the producers of Transformers on board. Mark Wahlberg has been attached to the project since March for the role of Duke but there's no word on whether the appointment of Sommers will change that. I'd say this was a good bit of hiring. Sommers' film are always interesting enough and I think I've seen Van Helsing and The Mummy at least three times just to try and take in the imagery, so I guess that's gotta be a good thing. The pairing of Wahlberg and Sommers for G.I. Joe is more than enough to win my money.
