Steve Carell: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Dodge - Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World

saffteotw One of the more underrated films of last year, Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World was the apocalyptic dramedy that paired up Steve Carell with Keira Knightley. Most people were extremely disappointed with the movie, as it was much more bleak than expected, but I absolutely loved it. The film was written and directed by Lorene Schaefer (who wrote Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist), and she managed to create some excellent, quirky dialogue for the duo of Carell and Knightley, who together had beautiful chemistry. Carell is fantastic at turning in a melancholy, yet still very funny performance, while Keira, playing against type, was the cool hipster girl to great success. The strength of Carell's performance comes in the disarmingly human portrayal of a hopeless individual, singularly determined to find something positive in the end of the world. It played to the actor's strengths - his indie appeal, and everyman charm tempered by his occasionally sad eyes and ability to inspire explosive laughter. Hopefully people will revisit this gem of a movie in the future with more forgiving eyes than its contemporary reviewers.
