Steven Spielberg Says Only Harrison Ford Will Ever Play Indiana Jones
Sorry Pratt.
There's only one Indiana Jones. Quite literally, apparently. Steven Spielberg has spoken with Screen Daily and made it very clear he doesn't think "anyone could replace Harrison as Indy." Whilst a lot of people out there were suitably intrigued by the rumour that tipped wunderkind Chris Pratt as the frontrunner for a reboot (it does make sense, if it had to be anyone), there are always going to be purists (myself included) who'd rather they just let it lie; Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones, end of. If you want to make an adventure flick with a charismatic lead actor, go create a new one. Spielberg also had this to say:
"I dont think thats ever going to happen... Its certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and thats Harrison Ford.If Harrison Ford (who's 73 now, mind) has a couple more outings left in him, then great. Spielberg goes on to proclaim that "so as long as theres more adventures out there, Ive got a bullwhip, a fedora, a leather jacket and a man on a horse who knows how to get the job done. Which is probably one of the most baller things the man has ever said. I'm game for another Old Man Indy; as awful as Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull was, it was definitely a kick to see that Harrison Ford still had it after all that time. The curmudgeonly take on Dr. Jones works for me (just no more swinging-with-the-monkeys, please). That said, after Ford's well and truly done, it'd be nice if a successful franchise could bow out gracefully for a change and not tread the reboot/remake/rehash path. I'm with Spielberg on that one.
