It's clear then that David Ayer is approaching Suicide Squad in a very unique way. After all, it's not every superhero movie in which one of the actors - Jai Courtney in this case - reveals that the main piece of direction he was given was to play Boomerang was to, "Find your inner sh**bag." However, Ayer isn't approaching Suicide Squad like a traditional comic book movie. "You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from fucking planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the fuck cares? But you do a story abut struggle and isolation and people who have been s**t on, that suddenly get thrown this lifeline...that's not so bad. I like to think of this as Comic Book Movie 2.0." That's an undeniably interesting approach to the material, and one that's going to either work well or see Suicide Squad - and the general idea of basing these movies around a team of villains - crash and burn. While producer Charles Roven talks up the fact that Ayer's approach has, "this darkness and edge," it also remains to be seen whether Warner Bros. are going to go the R-Rated route or if this PG-13 summer blockbuster just sounds and looks a lot more grown-up than it actually is. Whatever the case may be, there's no denying that it's so far sounding good!
