Suicide Squad: 14 Obscure Easter Eggs You Probably Missed
4. Mr J's Toys
Though Jared Leto consciously chose not to watch Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight, he obviously did pay attention to Jack Nicholson's. The line (which was eventually cut from the final film) that he delivers to Ike Barinholtz's Griggs about his excitement to who him his toys is borrowed and bastardised from Batman 1989 when Joker infamously says "where does he get all those wonderful toys".
In this universe, it's Mr J who has the toys.
And not only that, Leto also borrows Nicholson's line from The Shining about not wanting to hurt his wife (just to kill her) and also turns that on its head too to become his "I'm not gonna kill ya..." line to Harley Quinn.
Clearly, this is a performance that knows its roots.
