Because you'd send a Suicide Squad in to deal with everyday situations...

Though the news hurricane around who will direct it seems to have come to a temporary halt, Suicide squad 2 is definitely still happening. The box office return and huge home video sales ensured that much, even if the critical reception left a lot to be desired. But who needs critics these days, amiright?

According to Joel Kinnaman - via The Hollywood Reporter - the plan is to shoot the film in 2018, presumably suggesting that it will be coming out in 2019 at the earliest.

"As far as I know they’re writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it."

So far, Mel Gibson has been suggested as one of the front-runners to step into David Ayer's shoes, but several reports have added other names to the pot, including Guy Ritchie who said he'd love to tackle the project if he wasn't too busy.

For Kinnaman, the best option is Ayer himself, despite the fact that he's busy helming Gotham City Sirens for Warner Bros:

"Ultimately, I’d love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn’t want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that’s able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation. It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well."

That's all well and good, but why would a Suicide Squad of villains (put together as an absolute last resort, because no sensible person would do it otherwise) be brought in to deal with "grounded" situations? Their whole reason for existing is to deal with extraordinary, non-typical threats, not things you could send superheroes or normal military out to. Grounded wouldn't be right.

He's right that it needs a good story-teller, but that's not the way to make the sequel work. The way to make the sequel work is to reintroduce the Joker, have him be the real villain and basically ret-con the first film softly.
