Suicide Squad: 8 Reasons Jared Leto's Joker Is The Worst Part Of The Film
3. The Voice And His Delivery Is Just... Odd
The essential thing any budding Joker needs to get right is the voice. Heck, it's the only thing Mark Hamill does and he's regarded by some as the best take we've ever got.
This is where Leto really fudges it on a performance level, and there's no re-edits that can be used as an excuse here. There's shades of Ledger in there (it's impossible to not compare him to The Dark Knight version in some form), but then he'll take these odd turns into high pitched zaniness that don't fit. The only lines he delivers that hit right are those in the trailers; everything else has this odd, stilted air that feels like they've been lifted from experimental rehearsals rather than intended to be the finished product.
Having various speaking styles could have presented a totally unhinged, schizophrenic character, but it's all so under-developed you never fully get a sense of that. Although, despite how inconsistent it is, at least he maintained the same sort-of accent throughout; the same can't be said of Margot Robbie.
