Suicide Squad: First Look At Will Smith's Deadshot (Doesn't Look Great)
Now, to be fair to the costume designers, they were already fighting an uphill battle. Suicide Squad's cast is a mix of the exciting (Leto, Robbie) and the boring (Courtney, former RoboCop Joel Kinnaman who replaced Tom Hardy), but standing out as a major mis-step is Will Smith. That's the same Will Smith who's not made a good movie this millennium and has been vicariously living through his obnoxious son for the past few years. Even alongside Jai Boredney that's an odd choice. Smith is famous for wielding strong creative control over his movies, having his character's lines consistently rewritten to fit his unique 'style'. Post-After Earth he's shown a bit of self-awareness, realising starring in a jaunty sitcom and an oh-so nineties disaster movie doesn't make you a big deal in the 2010s, but even then Smith is a strange fit for someone who can be at best described as an anti-hero. After all, in this year's Focus, which he proclaimed as a new chapter in his career, he still couldn't escape trying to be the audience's best bud, showing he retains a rather inflated view of himself and his popularity. All this means that, even with a brilliantly realised, great costume design, the odds of this take on the character amounting to anything of worth is low - Smith's presence (and more prominently his ego) are just too big. They could, of course, have brilliantly realised a great costume design, but by this point it's quite clear Warner Bros. and DC are free-wheeling it. @SeansMovies has also snapped a picture of a masked soldier on set. Some sites are reporting it as Deadshot in costume, although give that the wearer has hair (Smith's gone bald for the movie) and the mask is a paintball cheapie off Amazon, it's probably some police/soldier goon assembling the team. What do you make of Will's Smith's Deadshot look? And what about his casting? Share your thoughts on the comments.
