Suicide Squad Is Somehow The Fourth Most Successful Movie Of Summer 2016
But Disney still dominated the summer.
Remember when Batman V Superman appeared to clean-up at the box office, only for terrible word-of-mouth to lead to a Fant4stic-level drop-off? The upshot was that - at least according to financial calculators - its eventual financial haul of $872 million would need to be coupled with merchandise and home video to make any proper profit, and an amount less than Man Of Steel at that.
No such wrangling will be needed for Suicide Squad, which according to research by Bloomberg is the fourth most profitable film of the summer, netting almost $200 million in cold, hard cash. Not bad for a movie that scored 26% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is of course a rather simplistic calculation - [BO Gross] - 2x[Budget] - and only works based off announced budgets (so is in this film's case is unlikely to cover the full reshoot issue) but it's good barometer all the same.
What's more interesting about the calculations, however, is the uncertainty of Disney's dominance. They have the top two spots on the graph, Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil War, and they're both considerably bigger amounts (around $400 million) than the rest of the pack, but at the same time have three movies on the "Biggest Losses" list. The Mouse House may be striking gold with their banner franchises, but were struggling just as much as everyone else to make sure movie's snag a slice of the box office pie in a disappointing summer.
