Writer-director Sean Ellis (Anthropoid) serves up a gritty, revisionist werewolf movie with this 18th-century horror flick, focused on a French village stricken with a gypsy curse.

If you can get onboard with its methodical pace, Eight for Silver is a visually remarkable, inventive riff on a tired subgenre, playing with the typical werewolf mythos just enough to stand apart.

The ensemble cast, including Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly, and Alistair Petrie, turn in uniformly solid performances, complimenting the bleak, eerie mood set by Ellis' lavish visuals, while the literate script digs deep into notions of colonial guilt.

At once brutally violent and hauntingly artful, it's yet further proof that Ellis might be one of the industry's most bafflingly unsung genre filmmakers working today.

Eight for Silver is awaiting distribution.
