1. CODA

No film from Sundance 2021 made quite the same tectonic impact as CODA, the second film from Sian Heder (Tallulah).

Sold to Apple for an unprecedented $25 million shortly after its festival premiere, Heder's film is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story with a unique twist, centered around Ruby (a phenomenal Emilia Jones), the only hearing person in an otherwise all-deaf family.

Heder's film compassionately details the enormous difficulties Ruby and her family face both in day-to-day life and where their finer ambitions are concerned.

Though many of its dramatic elements might seem familiar at first, the fresh angle Heder approaches them from allows them to be presented anew. If you've still got dry eyes by film's end, you're made of strong stuff indeed.

CODA will be distributed by Apple TV+.
