Super Bowl 2019: Ranking Every Trailer From Worst To Best
4. Us
The new trailer for Jordan Peele's Us does a stellar job of giving footage from the prior trailer new life via a brand new framing device.
Whereas the first trailer is heavily focused on selling the narrative hook of the film (family comes face-to-face with evil versions of themselves), this spot focuses almost exclusively on selling a dream-like atmosphere and Lupita Nyong'o's role as Adelaide Wilson. In allowing her to practically narrate the trailer, viewers are quickly immersed within the surreal, nightmare-ish mindset of her character.
This choice makes the subsequent horror beats all the more frightening and affecting. And boy, oh boy, are there horror beats.
In just the minute of runtime the spot runs, Peele and co. seem to be cramming in as many thematically-charged images as they can. Whether it's the birds-eye-view of the family walking along the beach and the shadows they cast, or the later shots of what looks to be the inside of some sort of mental asylum, this is bursting at the seems with evocative imagery just begging to be further explored.
