Superhero Costumes in Film: 5 That Were Awesome and 5 That Sucked

1. Captain America - Captain America (1979), Captain America II: Death Too Soon (1979)

In all honesty, almost any screen visualisation of the star-spangled hero could have topped this list. Captain America rarely succeeds on screen, partly because the dynamics of his costume are nigh on impossible to translate. The infamous costume of 1990, for instance, was nothing more than a Hasbro-esque gimmick. Indeed, neither did the acclaimed suit from The Avengers evoke any real sense of authority. Yet, there is another, less well known depiction that truly triumphs amongst the bunch. In 1979, a CBS-commissioned Captain America aired on television. In the same year, its sequel Captain America II: Death Too Soon also aired, providing the world with a second helping of arguably the least inventive superhero costume of all time. Consisting of a motorcycle helmet, a seemingly glass shield and a rather unflattering stretch of spandex, the 1979 edition was more reminiscent of a trademark Evel Knievel jumpsuit than of anything super; proving to be more crap than Cap.
