20 Recent Movies You Had NO IDEA Were Box Office Hits
11. Solo Mio
Solo Mio is a new romantic dramedy starring Kevin James, which was immediately enough to doubt its theatrical prospects.
After all, James' films are largely direct-to-streaming affairs these days, with his last major theatrical hit being Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 way back in 2015.
With the film also being produced by Angel Studios, an outfit which specialises in Christian-themed content with limited theatrical appeal, it seemed absolutely dead-on-arrival.
But against a shockingly low $4 million budget, Solo Mio went on to gross $26 million worldwide - more than six times its price tag.
It certainly helped that the film received solid reviews, allowing a wider reach beyond the core faithful demographic, and also a viral marketing campaign in the months leading up to release where James portrayed his protagonist, Matt Taylor, on social media and even at the Super Bowl.
Solo Mio is certainly a more modest hit compared to James' most lucrative heyday, but it's still performed very well theatrically for the sort of film that doesn't tend to make much box office bank these days.
