Terminator: Dark Fate Trailer Reactions - 6 Ups & 6 Downs

1. The Music... Oh God The Music

The idea that the best music for a trailer is always a stripped down, indie version of an existing song is not one that's going away without a fight. Even when fans taunt trailers that do it for being cliches and the kind of musicians who record those parred down versions have become the subject of mocking from some quarters, trailer companies still love them.

Dark Fate takes this to an entirely new level by using Bjork's song "Hunter," which fundamentally is not very good (though what it lacks in quality, it makes up for in weirdness, so that's something) and stripping it down thanks to RIAYA (who is accompanied by vocalist John Mark McMillan). The result is an improvement on the original, but it doesn't fit the trailer beyond a vague marriage of the lyrics and the storyline.

Given how consciously silly the rest of the trailer looks, it would have been WAY better for them to just use something like Ballroom Blitz or a high-octane but poppy rock song. Really push the silliness rather than forcing this strange sombreness that isn't right for it at all.

And now to the positives...
