10 Greatest Actors Alive (And Currently Working)

8. Ben Mendelsohn

12 Years A Slave
Open Road Films

This list’s premier player of the scumbag, Ben Mendelsohn would’ve been more at home acting in the 70s. Suffice to say, he nearly always plays some form of degenerate. A character actor if ever there was one, Mendelsohn isn’t ever likely get top-billing or helm a major Hollywood picture, but what he lacks in box-office draw, he makes up for in balls. Sheer balls.

He’s an all-smoking, hard-drinking, foul-mouthed lunatic, infusing every film he features in with an undercurrent of unease. His is a disquieting presence, so much so that a whole television series - FX’s Bloodline - has been made around the more unsettling aspects of his character.

The actor with the most edge on this list, Mendelsohn has not-so-quietly made a name for himself as the go-to supporting actor of the moment; always lurking in the shadows of his films. How fitting.

See Him In: Animal Kingdom: the first film to properly introduce him to audiences outside of his native Australia.
