That this speech has reached such iconic status with all these drawbacks is a credit to Mel Gibson's performance. Which is just as well; if the speech wasn't convincing then his William Wallace wouldn't have pulled off the greatest act of peer pressure in cinema history by getting these dudes whose name no one remembers to lay down their lives for his cause.
