15 Greatest Horror Films Of The Decade (So Far)

2. It Follows

It Follows is a haunting, beautiful nightmare with an original concept and which fits perfectly in the pantheon of classic horror movies.

The film is about a mysterious supernatural force that latches on to one person at a time and follows them relentlessly. If it catches up, the creature will kill the victim in a pretty horrifying fashion. Oh, and it always takes the form of a different person, so kind of like John Carpenter's The Thing, at any given time, anyone could be the creature.

But it can be "passed on" to another person via sex, so if you have sex with the creature's victim, it'll pass from them to you.

It's obviously a metaphor for casual, unsafe sex, expressing some of the anxiety associated with sex as a young adult. But it becomes much more than that, turning into a reflection on the power of meaningful relationships to fight back against the horrors of the world.

And besides the metaphor, it's just scary as hell, and the image of a naked, strange old woman slowly following the main character is instantly memorable. This is a film with a great lead, subtly scary moments and something interesting to say. When looking back on this decade of horror, It Follows will be remembered with the same fondness as A Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween.
