The Amazing Spider-Man 2: 10 Mistakes To Avoid

9. Hire a New Composer

Honorable-Mention-James-Horner James Horner is a legend, and should be treated as so. His back catalog of music is one of the best out of all of the composer of his era. His often banded around amongst names like John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, though always a step below. Regardless of his past record, Horner's got to go. His scores for both Avatar and The Amazing Spider-Man ripped off his work from such films as Glory and The Rocketeer. Even with The Amazing Spider-Man, we open with a soft female voice, sounding mystical and almost tribal. You know... kind of like how Avatar began. And then there's the first web slinging sequence that ramps up to a dramatic and heroic point in the music. A dramatic and heroic point Horner made at the beginning of The Rocketeer. Either Horner's a really big egoist, or he's run out of tools in his creative repertoire. While I will give him points for creating a decent theme to The Amazing Spider-Man, that's about all we really got out of the man this time around. More than what we got with Avatar, but still not enough to make a memorable soundtrack. Can you remember the theme to Avatar? You can't, can you? How about the theme to The Amazing Spider-Man? How about any other themes from The Amazing Spider-Man? See? You can't think of any others, besides the triumphant trumpet sting, and that still sounds like it belongs more with a nightly news cast than a superhero opus. Much like Iron Man 2, a new composer needs to be brought in, so that these films can build an effectively memorable soundscape.
