The Amazing Spider-Man 2: 5 Reasons Why Marc Webb's Return Could Prove Detrimental

2. Inserting Any Type of Love Triangle Will Prove Distracting

Note: this is much more speculation than the other entries on this list. There's one thing I'll give Webb credit for. He directs his actors very, very well. Garfield and Stone, when intimate, are beautifully shot and Webb takes his time with the scenes, because I really think that's his element. And, of course, there are rumors galore that this film will enter Felicia Hardy, Mary Jane Watson, or both into the picture, which opens up the door for Peter Parker to get a whole lot of lovin'. And I don't have any doubts that Webb could make it work. None whatsoever. He's the kind of director who, I'm sure, could very well balance up to three ongoing relationships. But I don't want a Spider-Man movie all about his numerous relationships. I'm not saying it should be a macho, action picture with no emotional standing. Movies like Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight Rises, and Captain America: The First Avenger proved that you don't need to compromise genuine, emotional characters for the sake of heroic bravado. The two can go hand-in-hand, and, boy, when they do is it effective. But I don't see Webb being able to pull away from these elements of the movie to highlight what makes Spider-Man Spider-Man. Remember that this isn't just a Spider-Man movie for all the fans; it's a movie for a new generation of kids who haven't been exposed to theatrical Spidey. And if they're sitting through two and a half hours of Peter picking a prom date, they may not understand all the hype behind the hero. The TV show and the comics can get away with intense love episodes or issues at 22 minutes or pages. Another one comes along and fills out all the rest for us. But we're probably only getting a trilogy with this, so we need to milk the Spidey mythos for everything it's got, right?

Cameron Carpenter is an aspiring screenwriter, current film and journalism student, and self-diagnosed cinephile, which only sounds bad in certain circles. Devoted fan of comics, movies, theater, Jesus Christ, Sidney Lumet, and Peter O'Toole, he sometimes spends too much time on his Scribd and comicbookmovie.com, but doesn't think you're one to judge, devoted reader. You can follow him on Twitter to watch him talk to people you didn't know exist. Oh, and Daredevil is quite the big deal around here (my head).
