4. Harry Osborn - Drug Addict
Most casual fans of the Spider-Man series are aware that Harry is Peter's cooler, wealthier, best friend. The thing that everyone typically forgets about is how they started out as enemies! Peter meets Harry during their first year at Empire State University, and socially awkward Peter often accidentally ignores his new acquaintances. He's much too busy thinking about super villains to pay attention to these common-folk, and that starts to bother Harry. Then, when Peter starts getting all the attention from the gorgeous Gwen Stacy, no one (especially Harry) can understand how this nerd is getting all the goods! Harry quickly assumes that Peter's being distant because he's pretentious, but once he realizes that Pete's just a shy, geeky kid, worried about the health of his dear Aunt May, Harry quickly turns over a new leaf. The two become best pals, share an apartment in the city together, and they are able to bromance happily ever after for a while. The casting for this role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is very interesting; a relatively unknown actor, Dane DeHaan, is portraying the affluent boy with the tortured soul. We've seen Harry discover his father's secret life as the Green Goblin in the original Spider-Man film series, so hopefully this series will be able to go in a slightly different direction. Harry's been through a lot of problematic situations over the years, but a nice place to start in the films would be his "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" drug addiction to amphetamines. In the early days of The Amazing Spider-Man comics (TASM #96), Harry had quickly become very upset as his entire life crumbled around him. His father was the Green Goblin, Mary Jane had just broken up with him, and in the typical "party boy" fashion, he turned to drugs to help ease the pain. This obviously was a terrible idea, and after an overdose served as a wake-up call, Harry got a fresh start. This storyline would really help set up an image for this new, darker, seemingly more brooding version of Harry in TASM2, and if it's anything like the comics, it would also serve as a resurgence of his father's alter ego, The Green Goblin, in TASM3.
