The Bad
Stuff like a city in peril after Parker befriends a scientist, only for them to turn into a bad guy, giving Spider-man a sense of responsibility when dealing with the friend-turned-bad-guy is as much a part of Spider-Man as the red and blue pyjamas. With that said, the story of the Lizard (who, visually is more like The Scorpion annoyingly) is dull as dishwater. Rhys Ifans starts strong as Dr. Curtis Conners but loses it the more he becomes the Lizard. I just didnt care for the villain like I was meant to. Why does he go bad? Why and how did he move all his lab equipment into the New York sewers? Why were there so many lizards in New York and why were they heading towards The Lizard? Thinking about it, I just couldnt care less about this villain but then thats not really anything different than how I feel about the comic version but at least he looks like a lizard and has a funky lab coat. This thing looked like Grig from the Last Starfighter but only about 1% as charming. Oh and what was the deal with the giant mutant rat? Deleted scene much? The real big buzz kill is the amount of times Spidey whips that mask off. We get it superhero movies, you have stars to show off, youve paid them afterall but man alive Peter Parker is maskless for so much of this flick. Save a kid. Mask off. Fight a baddie. Mask off. I actually liked the scene when hes casually sitting on a web in the sewers with the mask pulled up over his head but the final act is all mask off pretty much and you begin to wonder whos left to find out that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. The score is also far too generic. It insists upon itself at the wrong times and while it serves the film well enough, it's utterly forgettable. Oh and lastly, whatever bright spark thought it was a good idea to put most of the scene that arrives during the credits in one of the trailers, really needs a telling off. It wasnt a good scene anyway and did nothing to get me excited about a sequel but the surprise would have been nice. Okay, thats the stuff I couldnt care less about and on a bad day, a boring villain could have killed the film but it didnt. Next up...
