4. They Are Both Orphans
Both Bruce Wayne and Edward Nashton are orphans, but because of their widely different backgrounds, what it means to be an orphan is different between the two.
When Thomas and Martha Wayne died, Bruce lost his parents, but they also left him with billions of dollars that afforded him comfort and got him out of many hardships. Edward Nashton was an orphan of poverty, so grew up suffering, abused, and surrounded by drug addicts.
This comments on Bruce’s blindside because of his privilege. When Thomas and Martha Wayne died, Bruce could have continued their philanthropic works and would have changed the system of poverty that leads to crime. Instead, he became Batman because it feels better to use his rage to punch people instead.
