The Book Thief Movie: 4 Reasons Why You Should Be Excited

1. The Narrator

26 Roger Allam Alden It would be impossible to discuss The Book Thief without mentioning the omnipresent narrator, but those who want to avoid hearing the narrator's identity should stop reading now, because... The Book Thief is narrated by Death. Death is an ever-present character in Liesel's life and as such Zusak makes him the narrator of Liesel's story. This narration is an integral part of the story and a big part of what make the book so unique. When the novel was optioned for the big screen, many fans were convinced this narration would be impossible to transfer onto the big screen and consequently concerned that the story would not be the same without it. Readers of the book should rest reassured, however, that Death will indeed narrate the film. The identity of the actor playing Death was kept anonymous for some time but following the movie's recent premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival, it was announced that Death is voiced by acclaimed theatre actor Roger Allam. Allam has had roles in a number of recent movies but it is most famous for originating the role of Inspector Javert in the original production of Les Misérables in London's West End. Death is an often sarcastic, occasionally bitter and oddly sympathetic narrator. Ultimately, including Death as the narrator will allow director Brian Percival to translate Zusak's novel to the big screen and create a movie as emotionally powerful and moving as its source material.
