The Cloverfield Paradox: 20 WTF Moments
9. The Gyro Is Inside Volkov...Somehow
As if capturing a runaway severed arm isn't odd enough, this arm somehow knows that the gyroscope is concealed within Volkov's body, and manages to write this down for the crew. But...how?
Tam cuts into Volkov and, indeed, the gyro is inside, which they promptly restore to the station, resulting in the sun and Earth re-appearing on their navigation tools. A cause for celebration, it seems, as Mundy quips, "I'd clap if I could."
This is also a hugely pivotal point of the movie, as the crew realises that they've arrived in an alternate dimension. Though the finer details are kept ambiguous, the fan consensus so far seems to be that the Shepard overload created a huge dimensional rip, which has simultaneously caused the events of the first two movies as well as the upcoming World War II-set film Overlord.
Basically, this aspect of the plot makes a lot more sense if you stop thinking about it in a linear, causal sense, and just accept that the Shepard accident had immediate influence on the past, present and future, causing monstrous catastrophes in every direction.
Some might call it lazy, overly convenient writing, but it's probably the least messy way to deal with what the movie gives us.
