The Dark Knight Rises: 20 Blunders in Chris Nolan’s Trilogy

7. Realism?

All I keep hearing about is how Nolan€™s Batman franchise is grittier and more realistic than any other Batman movie. What€™s realistic about Nolan€™s Batman? On paper Batman is a ridiculous concept, and Nolan€™s franchise has tried to take Batman out of the fantastical and put him on said paper; €œWhat would happen if a Dark Knight existed in our world?€ Here€™s what€™d happen: Bruce Wayne dons the Batsuit and hits Gotham to fight crime. About half an hour into the night, he€™s shot dead and robbed by a crack-cocaine addict who€™s so addled by the drug that he€™s completely lost the capacity to feel fear. The end. When you strip the fantastical away from Batman, you€™re just left with a guy in a silly costume trying to fight crime and there's nothing gritty at all about that. Nolan€™s Batman, to me, just feels like an average-joe hero, and not a very smart or athletic one at that; he€™d have done just as well in a balaclava and as he did in the cape and cowl.
